"I recorded a video file with my video cam...however, now all I need is the voice not the video...is there anyway to get the sound only from the video? I'm working on this project in iMovie. Can iMovie help me extract audio from the video?"

And now you are editing videos in iMovie and wondering whether you can export only audio in iMovie.
The good news is that iMovie is a great video editing and movie making software and enables you to extract audio from video. Just follow the below steps to extract audio in iMovie.
How to export only audio in iMovie
When you finished a project, go to Share > Export using QuickTime.
Tips: To make a project. First, go to File > Import to load videos to iMovie. In this process, please make sure your videos and movies are iMovie compatible formats. Otherwise, you cannot import the videos to iMovie. For example, if you want to edit FLV, MKV, AVI, WMV, MTS, etc. videos in iMovie, you need to convert them to iMovie MP4 with a Video Converter for Mac. After the videos are added to iMovie Event, drag and drop video clips to the Project and then edit them.
Then a new window appears. In this window you can choose the place to save your project and the name and format of the project. To export audio in iMovie, hit "Export" and choose "Sound to AIFF" from the drop-down list.
After choosing the output format, you can click "Options" to customize the sound settings as below:
When all has been done, you can just click save to export audio in iMovie. iMovie will export the audio project and you can find it in the destination folder.
Tips: Besides extracting audio from videos in iMovie, you can also extract audio from DVDs to enjoy the DVD audio in your iPod as you like. Just convert the DVD movies to iMovie videos with a Mac Video Converter Ultimate and follow the guide above.
