Want to Downgrade from iOS 9 to iOS 8.4? How to Do it

Part 1. Why want to downgrade from iOS 9?

As you see, music, video, photos and document files are saved on the SD card of Samsung Galaxy S5. Thanks to Android open nature, these contents are well accessible. To backup such contents, you need no software but a USB cable. Read the following the guide to see how to backup Samsung S5 to PC.

Despite the fact that iOS 9 is expected to be packed with great new features, there are still some of us who won’t want to remain on iOS 9. There are several reasons you would want to downgrade to iOS 8. Some of them include;

  • You may not be all that impressed with the new features that iOS 9 has to offer and you want to go back to the way your device worked before.
  • Some of your apps may not work the way they used to in iOS 8 and you want to get your productive apps back just the way they used to work.
  • You may also find that your device runs a little slowly on the new iOS 9 and you want your device back to its performance glory.

These issues are actually a lot common than you think although if you want to downgrade be sure to do it very early before Apple stops signing the older iOS 8 version. They typically do this a few days after releasing the new iOS.

Part 2. Backup iPhone/iPad before downgrading from iOS 9

Before you can downgrade to iOS 8, you need to back up your device. You can do so using iCloud or iTunes. The one you choose is totally up to you just as long as you ensure that you backup your device. To backup using iCloud Tap on Settings> iCloud> Backup and stay on the Wi-Fi connection until the process is complete.

To backup using iTunes connect your device to your computer and then click on File> Devices> Backup. Keep your device connected until the backup is completed.

Now that you have a backup of your device, it is time to downgrade back to iOS 8.

Part 3. Steps to downgrade iPhone/iPad from iOS 9 to iOS 8.4

It is important to mention that iOS 8 may not be there a few days after iOS 9 ships. Therefore if you think you might regret the upgrade to iOS 9, it is a good idea to have a copy of the iOS 8 file to revert back to. To find this copy follow the path: yourusernamefolder/Library/iTunes and within the iPad software updates or iPhone software updates, find the iOS 8.4.2.ips file.

To restore iOS 8, just plug your device into your computer and launch iTunes. Locate the ipsw file we talked about above and open it. iOS 8 will be restored to your phone although all your non-stock apps and data will be deleted in the process.

We should also mention that for some reason Mac will delete the ipsw files so you may not have the latest one.

Part 4. Restore data from iTunes/iCloud backup

Unfortunately you will be unable to restore your iOS 9 data to iOS 8.4 so this may be a problem. After the downgrade your device will appear brand new so you may need to recover your data from iTunes or iCloud backup to make it work on iOS 8.4.
