How to Connect iPad to TV and Play iPad on TV (Yosemite included)

It’s a very common trend nowadays for us to download and watch a video on our iPad or any other mobile devices. The main reason being there’s a huge library of videos available online. It’s not only about the convenience, but also the ability to access the media files offline for entertainment on the go. However, the pleasure of watching a video on a bigger screen is still irreplaceable. Some of us might still want to connect the iPad or our mobile devices to the TV for watching a movie, photo slideshow or etc. in the comfort of a living room or bedroom. If so, you’ll have a range of options as follow for your consideration.

Option 1: Camcorder A/V Cable

You’ll need an iPad-compatible cable. If you don’t already have it, you can easily pick up a camcorder A/V cable on Amazon or eBay. It has a three-banded eighth-inch A/V plug at one end and a three-plug yellow/red/white RCA connection at the other. Alternatively, you can also watch the video files stored on your iPad wirelessly on the TV through the 2nd or 4th option.

Step 1: Set up iPad video options on your iPad

Note: Prior to setting up the video options, please ensure that the video file format is compatible for playback on your iPad. Otherwise, you’ll need to convert it in advance with a video converter. Go to Settings -> Videos -> Video Settings from the main menu. You can see three video settings: TV Out, Widescreen and TV Signal. Set the “TV Out”option to “Ask”, and then select the television system.

If you’re in the USA, you can set NTSC as the TV signal. Below is a list of varying standards used around the world:

  • NTSC: Israel, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile, Columbia, Mexico, Peru, Canada, USA, Taiwan
  • PAL: Indonesia, India, Jordan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Yemen, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Holland, Germany, Norway, Portugal Romania, Spain, Sweden, Britain, Switzerland, Algeria, Argentina, South-Africa, Brazil, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Macao
  • SECAM: Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Egypt.
  • Step 2: Connect your iPad to TV

    Insert the three-banded eighth-inch A/V plug into your iPad and connect the other end to the TV:

  • Plug Red RCA plug into TV's yellow RCA jack
  • Plug Yellow RCA plug into TV's white RCA jack
  • Plug White RCA plug into TV's red RCA jack
  • It’s done. You can watch iPad on TV and enjoy the digital life.

    Option 2: Wirelessly with Cloud Storage

    Instead of scrambling through with the cables, you can also share and watch the videos on your TV wirelessly through the iPad. All you need to do is to upload the videos or saved them on the Cloud storage. There’s one dedicated to the iDevices, namely the iCloud. Therefore, you can simply activate that on your iPad and then select the type of documents or files you want to be backed up and saved onto iCloud. There are also various Cloud storage platforms available if you want some alternatives to look at.

    Once you have saved the videos onto iCloud or other Cloud storage platform, log onto the account from your TV. All you need to do is browse for the file and then select it for playback. Apart from being able to watch the videos on your TV, you can also access the files stored iCloud anytime and anywhere you need to.     Option 3: HDMI Cable & Adapter

    Apart from the camcorder A/V cable, you can easily use a HDMI cable and adapter if you have any lying around. Otherwise, it’s also an affordable option if you were to buy them online. Connecting your iPad to the TV with a HDMI cable and adapter is more straightforward compared to the colored A/V jacks.

  • Connect the adapter to your iPad and the cable to the adapter
  • Connect the other end of the cable to the TV
  • Turn on the TV and select the correct input source (from the cable to TV connection)
  • Your iPad screen will automatically comes up on the TV

    Option 4: AirPlay to Apple TV

    If you have an Apple TV and wish to make use of the AirPlay feature on your iPad, please make sure that both of them are connected to the same Wi-Fi network before you start doing anything. Apart from that, also ensure that your iPad is running on at least iOS 5 and the Apple TV on the latest software update. After that, simply follow the steps below:

  • Turn AirPlay to “On” on your Apple TV
  • Activate the AirPlay feature on your iPad from the multi-task menu
  • Select Apple TV and then turn on “Mirroring”
  • You’ll now be able to see your iPad mirrored on the Apple TV
