How to Read EPUB eBooks on Kindle
"I have a new Kindle Fire HD and I am trying to send books in EPUB format to it. However, it doesn’t work at all. What I am doing wrong? Is there any way to read EPUB eBooks on Kindle?"
Now on the internet, in online books stores, and personal websites, you can always find eBooks in the open-source EPUB format. Because of its reflowable feature while reading and its small size to put on portable devices, EPUB has becomes one of the most popular eBook formats. However, it seems Amazon hasn’t planned to make it work on Kindles. From Amazon.com, you can find that many people are asking the question ‘how to read EPUB on Kindle’.
Though Kindle is not designed to support EPUB format, there are still workarounds to make it possible to read EPUB eBooks on Kindle. In the following, 2 basic ways are introduces for you to read EPUB eBooks on Kindle.
If you’re using a Kindle Fire, this could be the easiest way to read EPUB on Kindle. From the internet, you can search for a Kindle Fire e-reader which should support EPUB as well, get it installed on your Kindle Fire. If you have no idea about this kind of app, you can directly try OverDrive Media Console for Kindle Fire at http://omc.overdrive.com/kindle.php.
If you don’t want to install an app to read EPUB on Kindle or you can’t install an EPUB friendly e-reader on Kindle, you should convert EPUB to Kindle friendly format, .mobi. The bad news is that Amazon’s conversion service does not extend to EPUB format right now. The good news is that you can use Calibre, a free, but professional EPUB converting tool to do the task. To change EPUB format to Kindle supported MOBI, please follow the steps below
Step 1. Download and install Calibre on your computer. During the installation, it will ask you to select the language for the app. Select the language you need. Be careful, there is a trick you need to know. Since you need to convert EPUB to Kindle friendly format, you should select your eBooks in Amazon category. See the picture below.
Step 2. On the main interface, click the "Add books" button on the very left top to import EPUB books you need to convert. And then click the "Convert books".
Step 3. In the pop-up, you can change the eBook cover. Make sure the output format displayed on the right top is MOBI. If it is not, in the format drop-down list, select MOBI as the output format and click "Ok".
Step 4. After you click "Ok", calibre could finish converting EPUB to Kindle friendly format MOBI right away. After the conversion, you can click the "Send to device" button on the top to send the target files to your Kindle for reading. If you have connected the caliber with your Kindle email address, Calibre is able to send the eBooks your device via the email.
It is cool, right? You can use Calibre to convert other eBook formats to MOBI for Kindle too. But take care! Calibre is not able to convert DRM-protected EPUB to MOBI format. If you have bought some DRM-EPUB eBooks, you need to remove the DRM first, and then do the EPUB to Kindle conversion.
