How to Recover iMessages from iPhone

How could I selectively recover deleted iMessages from iPhone?

Hi all, I deleted a 1-year iMessage thread accidentally. I need to get it back urgently. About a week ago I synced my iPhone with iTunes on my Mac. How can I retrieve that thread? By the way, I don't want to restore my iPhone, I only want iMessages back. Any suggestion?

It's actually very easy, as you've said that you synced your iPhone with iTunes on your computer recently. You know, everything on your iPhone has been automatically backed up by iTunes when you sync devices with it, though you can't view the backup file, nor only restore the iMessage content from it. However, with a third-party iPhone iMessage recovery tool, you can do it. Of course, if you don't have a backup, you still can choose to scan and recover it directly from your iPhone. There is always a way.

As to the recovery tool, here is my recommendation: Wondershare Dr.Fone Mac (for Mac users) or Wondershare Dr.Fone (for Windows users). Both of them allow you to extract iTunes backup files, preview and recover deleted iMessages selectively. Moreover, Wondershare Dr.Fone lets you directly scan your iPhone to recover iMessages, which is great.

Download the trial version of iPhone data recovery program below and then you can install it on your computer.

Next, let's perform deleted iPhone iMessage recovery with Wondershare Dr.Fone (Mac) in steps.

Choose a device type and a recovery mode

The window below is the primary window of Wondershare Dr.Fone Mac. You'll get it after running it on your computer. Just click the phone type of yours. Here we choose iPhone 4 to carry on.

There are two ways for you to recover iMessages from your iPhone. One is to extract your iTunes backup file, and the other is directly scan your iPhone.

Advice: If you have synced your iPhone with iTunes recently (before you deleted your iMessages), you can choose the former. If you haven't, switch to the latter.

Part 1: Recover iPhone iMessages from iTunes Backup Files

Step1. Extact iTunes backup file

All backup files of your device type will be listed automatically after you enter this recovery mode. Choose the one for your iPhone (usually the one with latest backup date if there are more than one), and click "Start Scan" to begin extracting it for your iMessage.

When the extracting completes, the whole content of the backup file are displayed in details. Select "Messages" on the left side on the window, and you can preview detailed contents of your messages and iMessage. Mark those you want to recover and click "Recover" button on the top of the window, you can save them on your computer with one simple click.

If you only want to retrieve message attachments from your iMessage, you can select "Messages Attachments" for recovery. It contains all attachments from your iMessages.

For Windows users, use Wondershare Dr.Fone for Windows to perform similar steps, or you can read the guide here: iPhone SMS Recovery

Part 2: Recover iMessage Contents by Scanning Your iPhone

Step1. Get into your iPhone's system

To recover deleted iMessages on iPhone, you need to get into the iPhone's system before scanning it. Follow steps below:

  1. Hold your device and click the “Start” button.
  2. Hold “Power” and “Home” buttons on your device at the same time for exact 10 seconds.
  3. When 10 seconds passed, release the “Power” button right away, but keep holding the “Home” button. After another 15 seconds, you’ll be informed that you’ve successfully entered the device system and you can release the “Home” button now.

You can try recovering it directly from your iPhone. Because it's not in your iTunes backup file actually.

Hi. If an iMessage conversation is deleted from and iPhone 4 and it has not been backed up whilst the message was still on the phone, and then the phone is backed up. Will it then be able to recover from the itunes backup or from the phone directly?

Any new data can cause this result, this is why we keep reminding users to stop using their devices after their files were lost if they want to perfectly get them back.

Angela, recently you can only recover message attachments from iTunes backup of iPhone 4S. And yes you can preview the found messages with trial version so that you can check whether Dr.Fone finds what you want to recover or not.

hi selena what are 'message attachments' can you recover them from iphone 4s? also if it says there are 10 messages can you see the beginning of messages before recovery to see if they are the deleted ones that i would pay for to recover?
  • Selena  2013-02-27 08:25
I do not actually understand what did you mean. Currently you can recover message attachments directly from iPhone 3GS/4. And about the recovery, you can selectively recover the found messages as your wish.

also are the 'message attachments' the imessages?? thanks
  • Angela  2013-02-26 10:29
thanks selena, can you see part of the messages to see if they are the deleted ones prior to recovery?

This is hard to tell. Just download a trial version of Dr.Fone for iPhone 4S to scan your iPhone 4S. If your deleted imessages are found after the scanning, you can use Dr.Fone to retrieve them then.
