How to Play WMV on OS X Mavericks

Apple's OS X 10.9 Mavericks has just been released. If you're planning to upgrade your computer to the new operating system, there is something you should know. Mac computers doesn't support the the WMV file format natively. You can play an WMV file on the older operating systems just because some plugins such as Perian have been installed. However, when you upgrade your computer to the latest OS X Mavericks, these plugins will become unavailable. It means you can no longer playback your WMV files on Mavericks. Well, there's always a solution, or probably more than one solution!

Since we're not too sure when would the plugins be made compatible with Mavericks, we need to look out for alternative measures. Luckily, I've found 2! As the 1st solution, you can use a brand new player for Mavericks to playback your WMV files. In solution 2, you can convert the WMV files to a QuickTime supported format. After that, the converted WMV files shall be Mavericks-compatible.

  • Solution 1: Install A New Player for Mavericks
  • Solution 2: Convert the WMV to QuickTime-compatible Files

  • Solution 1: Install A New Player for Mavericks

    1st Alternative: The Wondershare Player

If you choose this solution, you can directly open your WMV files on Mavericks. But an alternative player such as the Wondershare Player will be needed. You need to basically abandon your Mac's default player, QuickTime. But it's all worth it.

As a start, the Wondershare Player can render most files that's not QuickTime-compatible. You will never have to worry about the file format and its limitations. Besides that, you will be surprised at its simple yet sleek and friendly interface. Just download and try the Player for yourself!

    2nd Alternative: The VLC Player

The VLC media player is made available to the public under the GNU General Public License and their very first version of the player wasn’t officially released until 2009. It also compatible for download on multi-platforms such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and etc. Even though the Mac version is considered to be the more recent release, those who have previously used it on Windows will find it very familiar.

Solution 2: Convert the WMV to QuickTime-compatible Files

In solution 2, it's trying to make use of the pre-installed QuickTime in order to play the WMV files on Mavericks; without installing a new player of course. In order to do it, you'll need a WMV converter for Mavericks, the Wondershare Video Converter for Mac . It lets you convert the WMV files to a Mac natively supported format like the MOV. By conversion, you can easily edit the WMV files in iMovie and transfer it to iTunes and much more. Isn't it interesting? Check out for more in the steps below.
