MPG Player: How to Play MPG Files in Windows/Mac (Snow Leopard Included)

If you're not used to an MPG (or MPEG) file format, you first have to know that it's only a container and it's normally for storing MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos of their own codecs. On top of that, not all media players would be able to playback an MPG file (or MPEG) successfully. If your player has failed to playback the files, don't worry. We've wrote down how you'll be able to do it with two different solutions; Part 1 for converting your files; or Part 2 for using a different MPG player.

Part 1: Convert MPG files for playback in Mac (Snow Leopard Included)/Windows

An MPEG-1 is usually used on a video CD disc (VCD), while an MPEG-2 is often used on a DVD disc. As a matter of fact, it's not uncommon to find yourself in such a dilemma because most applications aren't very supportive of the MPG files. That's especially true if you're on Mac. To solve this problem, you'll most likely to turn your help towards a file converter. The Wondershare Video Converter (Video Converter for Mac) is a great helper. It has a wide range of video output formats and therefore, you can use it to convert your MPG files to any format that you want.

Part 2: Play MPG files with MPG players in Mac (Snow Leopard Included)/Windows

Generally, your Windows Movie Player (WMP) shall be able to playback your MPEG-1 videos. It's the same, however, for the MPEG-2 videos due to it's different coding. You can try to download a software to boost up the supported codecs in your WMP's library. This is not guaranteed to work, though as it's depends on the compatibility of the add-ons or plug-ins. As for the QuickTime player on your Mac, the MPG file format is definitely not compatible with the Mac operating system. If you want to watch the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos, you'll have to resort to another media player as an alternative.

The Wondershare Player can be the best MPG player that you've came across. It's a free media player and it can handle almost any type of video and audio files. That's including both the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files. It's no doubt the ideal choice or player to playback all of your media files.
