We won't know how does the iPhone 4S (or iPhone 5) look like until it's officially released by Apple. But various industry sources indicate that we will get an iPad-like iPhone 4S.
Aluminum Backing
The rumor starts with Taiwan's Economic Daily News and the Japanese blog Makotakara. According the talk, Apple will abondon the glass back for aluminum backing. The potential reasons include easy damages from scratching, difficulties of painting white, weight of glass, and more durable for Aluminum backing. Antenna will also be redesigned so that cellular signal can penetrate easily without significant loss.
Case Makers Are Ready
Case makers may have much more interest than average users in what the next-gen iPhone will look like. That will take them to a vantage point in the competition. And from their iPhone 5 case design, we will find a clue to what iPhone 4S will look like.
According to MacNN, a case listing on Alibaba.com describes the case as a "crystal case for Apple iPhone 4S". But now the page has been removed (which usually is a meaningful sign). As illustrated in the figure, it's apparent that the flash is moved away from the camera lens and the screen shape has the same ratio as the iPad 2.
So what do you think if Apple unites the iPad and iPhone designs? Some may think it's a good idea, while others may have different views - or not care at all. The verdict is, no matter they look like similar or totally different, you could always transfer contents between iPhone and iPad, so the internal update may be more important.
